The Icy Barn Door

Well, it’s June, but it sure doesn’t feel like it! It’s been a fairly cold, rainy June so far in my part of the country. On the other hand, at least it isn’t wintery cold! I’m sharing a poem I wrote 3 years ago about a particularly icy winter we had, to try to make us grateful that it’s at least as warm as it is!

Hailstones pelt my face as I walk,
Endlessly across snow hard as a rock;
Angling my path to the top of the hill,
Pausing when wind blows so hard I stand still.
Barn lock is frozen, coated with ice,
Hammer’s over here, hit it twice;
Chipping ice away from the bolt and the edge,
Icicles so solid they’ve formed a wedge.
Barn door is finally open now,
Creaked jarringly wide with a cracking sound;
Wind blows door, almost pinning me inside,
Have to use all my strength to open it wide.
Pick up the hammer to de-ice the latch,
Pushing hard on the door when the wind tries to catch;
Finally get the barn door secured,
When the blizzard begins and whiteout obscures.

It’s getting warmer!

The last few days have been absolutely beautiful. Summer is well on its way! I love the spring when it starts getting nicer out; it’s the perfect time to go for walks and to go exploring. Friday morning was hot and sunny, and Jacob and I went to one of my favourite places in town: a little pond a short walk alongside some train tracks. It was so peaceful and quiet, a perfect start to the day before I had to go to work later in the afternoon. :)

There’s still ice on the water, but it’s melting and it was warm enough that I had to take off my sweater! We sat on the grass next to the water for a few minutes, and I was tempted to dip my feet in it, but I ran my hand through it and it was still a little chilly so I decided not to. Not yet anyway. xD Maybe in a month…

I was also driving down a dirt road recently, and I slightly bottomed out on a small lump of what I thought was melting snow.
Jacob: You shouldn’t have driven over that.
Me: I didn’t think it was solid.
Jacob: *looks at me like I’m crazy or something* It was a rock.
Me: Oh.

xD I’m looking forward to seeing what fun things I’m going to end up doing this summer. Last summer was an epic adventure. Hopefully this year will be the same. Of course, I’m looking forward to my August camping trip as always. I’m going to request time off work for that soon. This will be my 10th year in a row going! I’m hoping Mal and Jacob will be able to come with me again too. We have many plans. >:D My mom already claimed she isn’t coming along this year, but I always seem to convince her to come anyway, so we’ll see how that goes. xP

When the Wind Blows

Today I’m going to share a poem I wrote about 3 years ago. I was doing my schoolwork (I was homeschooled) one afternoon during a bad snowstorm, and I started writing a poem in my head. It’s about the isolation you feel at home in the countryside during a snowstorm like that, when the power is out and the wind is blowing snow around so much that you can’t see more than a foot in front of your face. It’s like the rest of the world is gone, and you’re just trying to survive the storm. :)

When the Wind Blows

When the wind blows
And snow flies away,
Signals the start
Of a brand new day.
Crashing, smashing,
Hurricane wind;
The last place on earth
Left to defend.
When the wind blows
And snow flies away,
I’m lost in the darkness,
Forced to stay.

Revisiting 21 Things

As of yesterday, I am now 21 years old! It was a great day. We went skiing — I wasn’t able to go at all last year and I hadn’t gotten a chance to this year until then, so that was awesome. I also tried out snowboarding again for the last half hour of the day. On our way home, we stopped for pizza and finished the night off with a movie at home. :)

We actually opened presents on Saturday, celebrating my birthday, Mal’s, and my aunt Chantal’s. One of my presents, from my aunt Titi and uncle Brandon, was these delicious little chocolate chip cookie dough brownie bombs that Brandon made. They are amazing!

So now it’s time to revisit my old list of 21 Things To Do Before I Turn 21! I completed about half of the things on my list, which is more than I thought I would! Along with the ones I’ve already written about, I’ve started a couple of others. #9 is learn to play some songs on my guitar; I started learning a couple of parts of a few different songs, but I’m still working on that one! I rewatched the first few episodes of Friends (#14 on my list), so I’ll check that one off the list. I’m sure I’ll watch the whole thing over again sometime anyway. :) #15 on my list was to download more songs, and weed out some of the ones on my giant list of songs I’ve wanted to get over the past 10 years. I’ve done really well on that, and am almost through the whole list! #20 was to get better at barre chords. I’ve been working on them quite a bit and managed to play a song with one in it — not particularly well (I had to pause to position my hand for the barre chord every time), but I made it through the song so I guess I’ll count that. xD

So, I guess that leaves:

2. Shoot a real gun.
3. Win a game of Crokinole against my parents.
6. Ride Destiny on the beach.
8. Prestige on Call of Duty: Black Ops III.
9. Learn to play some songs on my guitar.
10. Finish all the seasons of Pretty Little Liars that are on Netflix.
12. Drive a motorcycle.
13. Fill up my 2014 graduation photo album with pictures from my graduation and 2014.
17. Take Molly for a trail ride.

That’s just 9 things that I didn’t do. I will try my best to do them before I turn 22! ;)

Bareback in the Snow

I got to go for a nice bareback ride at sunset in the snow recently! Molly got a little hyper and started running circles around us. xD I wish I got pictures of that, but I was a little busy making sure Des didn’t get any bad ideas lol.

On another note, today is Destiny’s birthday! She’s 12 years old now. <3 Happy birthday to my lovely fluffy little girl!

Skidoo Trip

Last night, Mal, Jacob, and I hooked up a caboose behind Jacob’s skidoo and drove around.

Later, we stopped to have a fire, drink Mountain Dew, and eat cookies.

On the drive home, it was getting dark and he doesn’t have headlights, so I made him some by holding a flashlight in each hand, pointed straight ahead. xD It worked pretty well and was a lot of fun!

This foggy morning

It was beautiful this morning! It was peaceful and still, a bit foggy, and there was still frost on the trees. I couldn’t help but stop to take some photos while I was walking toward my car on my way to work.
